Project for Needle Felting
Recommended Supplies:
0.5 oz. Red Wool Roving
0.2 oz. Black Wool Roving
1 general purpose felting needle (#38 D)
1 foam felting pad
-
Making the Body: Starting with one end, roll red roving tightly into a 4 inch diameter. Place ball on foam pad. With needle in one hand and ball in the other gently start poking needle into ball at wispy ends to secure roving into place. Punch the needle into the ball about ¼’ inch. Make sure your fingers are out of way of needle at all times. Keep punching needle into ball until you have needled it into the appropriate shape (see picture for body shape).
-
Making the Groove: On top of body, needle felt a thin line down middle of back making the appearance of a “groove” indentation.
-
Making the Head: Roll some black roving into a one inch diameter ball and felt ball until it is relatively firm to form the head.
-
Attaching the Head to the Body: Join head and body together by needle felting the two together. Start by punching at the edges of head where it meets the body. Continue felting until head is firmly attached.
-
Making & Attaching the Spots: Roll a small wisp of black roving around your finger and form into a flat circle. Needle felt the black spot on the foam pad until it is semi-firm. Needle felt the black spot to the body of the lady bug. Repeat to make four or as many spots you want on your ladybug.
